Topcon Medical Systems Inc. (Paramus, New Jersey) have launched a dedicated iPhone application providing a mobile version of the "EyeRoute Image Management" software. The new app became available on the Apple iTunes website on April 8th, 2010. Clinicians who use the EyeRoute software in their practice are now able to access images and reports securely from any 3GS compatible iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. The development is likely to be popular with many ophthalmologists who often work in two or more different locations on any given day, further realising a paperless "on-the-go" work environment.
The application may be downloaded from the Apple iTune store for $19.99. For clinicians not using the Topcon software the app can provide access to a demo database of images with varying viewing and editing features. The company's marketing pitch claims that the marriage of their mobile software with the ubiquitous iPhone "will enable eye care professionals to achieve greater workflow efficiencies and benefit both practitioners and patients with significant time and cost savings owing to its virtually anywhere, anytime access for quick reference". Only time will tell however, in the meantime the move into the mobile space is recognised as an obvious business play to maximise market penetration and increase positive brand associations.
Topcon's press release features Dr. Julia Haller, MD, Ophthalmologist-in-Chief at Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as one of its first customers. Dr. Haller comments that "I view this new addition to the EyeRoute suite as a veritable boon in enabling practitioners to stay connected wherever they are in the world". Customer feedback should become available over the summer months and while significant efforts have been put into the sales and marketing end by Topcon it will be interesting to watch how the EU market uptake evolves and what utility is provided by the initiative on a practical day-to-day basis.
