Abstract Details

PURPOSE:The study of choroidal morphology and thickness plays an important role in the evaluation of retinal diseases. Numerous works have been published about the capacity of measuring choroidal thickness. The data obtained are very discordant probably based on the different analysis techniques that do not allow to obtain comparable information between the various methods. Moreover, the most common unit of measurement actually used is the micron that might not be the most appropriate for examining the choroid

Methods:

To measure choroidal thickness in healthy eyes through an experimental algorithm pixel-by-pixel already validated in a recent publication. 60 eyes of 30 patients were examined with SD-OCT B-scan passing through the fovea (Spectralis (Heidelberg Engineering) system) with enhanced depth imaging (EDI). All images were exported and inserted into a system analysis by use of an algorithm in MatLab

Results:

Choroidal thickness measurements were accurate and the segmentation much more detailed in comparison to the manual methods

Conclusions:

The measurement pixel-by-pixel produces choroidal measurements and values much more detailed in comparison with other OCT software. This method should be validated on a larger sample and with images from different OCT currently available
