Abstract Details

Purpose:

35 patients underwent macular hole surgery with ILM peeling included in this study. Before and after surgery, a complete ophthalmic examination and detailed macular analysis with Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography were performed.

Setting:

Kocaeli University, Faculty of Medicine, Ophthalmology Department, Kocaeli, Turkey

Methods:

35 patients underwent macular hole surgery with ILM peeling included in this study. Before and after surgery, a complete ophthalmic examination and detailed macular analysis with Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography were performed.

Results:

Surgical closure rate was 88.6% with the first macular hole surgery and 98% with the second surgery. The mean foveal contour formation duration was 2.80±1.51 months. Foveal contour formation was occurred in 85.7% of patients. Foveal contour formation was longer in patients with stage 3 and stage 4 macular holes. The visual acuity was higher in patients with better preoperative visual acuity levels (r=0.921, p=0.001). There was a reverse correlation between the duration of symptoms and the increase in visual acuity (r=-0.672,p=0.000). Postoperative central macular thickness was reversely correlated with the final visual acuity (r=-0.743, p=0.025).

Conclusions:

The preoperative visual acuity, duration of symptoms and postoperative central macular thickness are of good predictive value for postoperative final visual acuity in macular hole surgery.
