Purpose:

Laser therapy for macular edema is used to stabilize visual acuity, a direct indicator of retinal function. We aim to identify the short-term effects of macular laser therapy on oxygenation of retinal vessels in diabetic macular edema (DME.)

Setting:

Laser therapy for macular edema is used to stabilize visual acuity, a direct indicator of retinal function. We aim to identify the short-term effects of macular laser therapy on oxygenation of retinal vessels in diabetic macular edema (DME.)

Methods:

22 patients with sight threatening diabetic maculopathy were recruited to a single centre, open label, prospective, cohort study, to measure relative retinal oxygen saturation, using Oxymap technology. Patients’ retinae were imaged pre and post retinal laser photocoagulation. Patients were monitored monthly in clinic with OCT and Oxymap imaging for four moths following the intervention.

Results:

Data was collected from 22 patients (32 eyes), of which 16 were male and 6 female. The age ranged from 29 to 81years. A reduction of average central retinal thickness of subject eyes from 304μm to 260μm post laser-therapy was noted. A statistically significant increase in mean oxygen saturation of macular vessels from 87.06 ± 1.13 % pre-laser to 93.09±0.86% post-laser was seen (p< 0.01). Whereas, the mean venous oxygen saturation, of macular vessels, decreased significantly from 67.41±1.73% pre-laser to 60.31±2.19% post laser (p<0.01).

Conclusions:

Results show a small increase in macular arteriolar oxygen saturation post laser and a significant corresponding decrease in macular venous oxygen saturation post laser therapy.
