To evaluate macular edema in non proliferative diabetic retinopathy and its relation to blood glucose levels
S.B. Ulucanlar Education and Research Hospital,Ankara-Turkey
A total of 33 patient, with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy were evaluated. The mean age was 54.7 years (min 33-max 73) . Patient had any ocular surgery, laser treatment, and or intravitreal injection were excluded.Presence of macular edema and central macular thickness (CMT) were measured with same OCT. Each patients HbA1c, blood High Density Lipoprotein HDL, low Density Lipoprotein, LDL, Trigliserid levels were evaluated
The mean CMT in RE was 291.42 u (min 201, max 505) and in LE was 281.51 u (min 216, max 551). The mean HbA1c level was 9.18 mg/dL (min6.4 max12.93) and the mean HDL level was 47.25 (min 26-70 max), LDL level was 110.56 (min 43-190 max) Trigliserid level was 168.68 (min 69 –max 371) Each of them were higher than normal limits.
Both high HbA1c and blood lipids levels may cause macular edema in diabetic patient even in non- proliferative stage.
