Abstract Details

To present two cases of acute endophthalmitis following intravitreal dexamethasone implant injection

Cukurova University, Department of Ophthalmology, Adana, Turkey

The medical records of the patients with intravitreal dexamethasone implant associated endophthalmitis were analyzed; ocular findings, management, clinical response to the treatment and final vision of the patients were evaluated

Macular edema was secondary to diabetic retinopathy in one and branch retinal vein occlusion in the other patient. They admitted with a complaint of decreased vision, pain and redness in the treated eye, three and five days following the injection respectively. The ophthalmologic examination of both patients revealed endophthalmitis. The patients underwent aqueous sampling, vitreous tap and intravitreal antibiotic injection, and were followed with topical fortified antibiotic treatment. Both patients showed a good clinical response and functional vision was restored

Appropriate medical treatment can provide favorable outcomes in endophthalmitis associated with intravitreal implant injection, without surgical intervention and removal of the implant
