To report the clinical features in a series of posterior scleritis patients

A retrospectives analysis of 50 eyes in 41 patients with posterior scleritis over a period of 15 years (1997-2011) was done. Clinical features, associated systemic disorders, management, angiographic & ultrasonographic findings were recorded


The mean age of presentation was 42.6 years. Females (73.2%) were frequently affected. It was bilateral in 22% patients. Common complaints were diminution of vision (87.8%) and pain (65.8%). Common misdiagnosis was central serous retinopathy (17%). Rheumatoid arthritis was associated in 10% patients. Conjunctival congestion (16%) was most common anterior segment finding. Common fundus finding were choroidal folds (58%), subretinal fluid (58%) and disc edema (52%). Mean choroidal thickening was 2.21mm. T-sign was seen in 44% patients. Mainstay treatment was systemic steroids alone (31.7%) or combination therapy of immunosuppressives and steroids (24.4%)


Posterior scleritis presents with protean features but has a good prognosis if detected early and treated
