To report splitting of a dexamethasone implant (Ozurdex) immediately after the injection in a patient with branch retinal vein occlusion
Eye Clinic, Kayseri Training and Research Hospital, Kayseri, Turkey
A 61-year-old female referred to our clinic with decreased vision in her left eye for about 2 weeks. Visual acuity was 1/10 and intraocular pressure was 17 mmHg. The patient was diagnosed as macular edema associated with brach retinal vein occlusion and was treated with Ozurdex injection that was performed according to recommended technique. Immediately after the injection, fundus examination revealed the splitted ozurdex implant.
2 months after the injection, the visual acuity improved to 3/10 and foveal contour was restored. Intraocular pressure ranged between 17 and 20 mmHg during follow-up period.
Although rare, splitting of ozurdex implant may be encountered after the injection. Fortunately, the splitting did not cause any change in effectivity and adverse event profile of the drug.
