The purpose of the study was to quantitatively assess the central macular edema using Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph III (HRT III) Macular Edema Module and its correlation with macular thickness measurements with Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) in patients with diffuse diabetic macular edema (DDME)


In a single-centre prospective clinical trial, 47 eyes of 47 patients with type 2 diabetes with DDME were included.


Macular edema index (MEI) measurements with HRT III (Heidelberg Engineering) macular edema module and macular thickness measurement with spectral domain OCT (Spectralis® Heidelberg Engineering) was performed in same study population


The mean MEI value +/- SD of the central foveal sector was 1.87 +/- 0.92 by HRT and the mean central foveal thickness of the entire group was 311.43 +/- 118.26 ┬Ám by OCT measurements. There was a moderate overall correlation between HRT and the OCT measurements (r = 0.62, p<0.0001).


Central MEI measurement by HRT macular edema module moderately correlates with central macular thickness by spectral domain OCT. HRT III macular edema module is a useful tool for objectively monitoring macular edema in diabetic patients with DDME.
