To quantify the morphological alterations in corneal cells in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus in relation to the severity of diabetic retinopathy.
Charles Nicolle hospital ophthalmology department , Tunis , Tunisia
Thirty eyes of 30 patients with Type 2 diabetes and 30 eyes of 30 healthy control subjects were evaluated with in vivo corneal confocal microscopy. Patients with diabetes were classified into three groups: patients without diabetic retinopathy (10 patients), patients with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (ten patients) and patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (10 patients). Endothelial cell density and cell abnormalities were evaluated.
Significant reductions in endothelial cell densities were observed in patients with diabetic retinopathy. However, no difference was observed in cellular density between diabetic groups
Corneal cell pathology occurs in patients with diabetic retinopathy, however diabetic retinopathy stage seems not influencing endothelial cell density and morphology
