Abstract Details

Purpose:

Purpose: To investigate subfoveal choroidal thickness (SCT) in chronic heavy smoking(CHS) (≥1 box/day for ≥10 years) and nonsmokers subjects using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI OCT).

Setting:

Setting: Prospective, case-control study.

Methods:

Methods: A total of 51 eyes from 51 subjects (31 eyes with CHS, 20 nonsmokers) were studied. All subjects were imaged on the fovea using Optovue RTVue retina cross (OptovueInc., Fremont, CA). Subfoveal choroidal thickness was measured and compared among groups.

Results:

Methods: A total of 51 eyes from 51 subjects (31 eyes with CHS, 20 nonsmokers) were studied. All subjects were imaged on the fovea using Optovue RTVue retina cross (OptovueInc., Fremont, CA). Subfoveal choroidal thickness was measured and compared among groups.

Conclusions:

Conclusion: Our results suggest the subfoveal choroidal thickness was decreased in CHS eyes. This study may support the long-term smoking for the development of age related macular degeneration.
