To evaluate the prevalence of apnea syndrome (AS) in patients with age macular degeneration (AMD )
Department of Ophthalmology, Toulouse, France
150 consecutive patients were recruited from the ophthalmology department of Toulouse . They were all examined by the same physician, specializing in AMD. All patients completed the Berlin questionnaire
The average age of patients was 73.5 years , with 62 % of the femmes. All patients agreed to complete the questionnaire. 20% of patients had a positive score (at least 2 /3), indicating that it was recommended to complete investigations by polysomnography 5 % of the patients were known to have a AS .
AMD is a multifactorial disease (genetics, oxidative environement ...). A decrease in oxygenation, as in the AS may cause hypoxia and promote apoptotic phenomenon, well known in normal pressure glaucoma. This process may also occur in AMD by promoting cell aptoptose default oxygenation. Berlin questionnaire has only a few questions and can detect patienst risk of AS. Examine AMD patients could help identify these patients and Ainis enable them to appropriate treatment. More than 50% of patients with AS are not diagnosed, it is important to know the populations at risk.
