Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the dynamics of ROP & APROP occurrence & treatment response in the developing countries

Setting:

Tertiary Eye Hospital & Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Western India

Methods:

Retrospective consecutive non comparative descriptive case series of neonates screened between January 2006- December 2013. Details regarding birth weight, gestational age, stage of ROP were noted. Treatment was performed according to Early Treatment of ROP (ETROP) guidelines

Results:

Incidence of ROP among all live births was 0.34% & among those screened was 21.29%.22.66% of ROP cases had treatable ROP & 77.33% had non treatable ROP.12.23% were diagnosed to have APROP.88.23% eyes showed regression of ROP after treatment

Conclusions:

Protocol based screening & prompt treatment is highly effective in preventing avoidable permanent visual disability
