Abstract Details

Purpose:

to evaluate surgical procedure, OCT characteristics, anatomical and functional outcome of patient affected by macular detachment due to optic pit

Setting:

Milan multicenter study

Methods:

Ten patients were retrospectively evaluated. Mean VA before surgery was 20/100 and mean follow-up 22,8 months (2-60 months). All patients received vitrectomy with posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) induction and gas injection. One patient received ILM peeling and one endolaser photocoagulation temporally the optic nerve

Results:

VA improved in 6 patients, in 3 remained stable and decreased in 1 patient who received the ILM peeling and presents retina atrophy at the OCT at the end follow-up. Retina reattachment is achieved in most cases 12 months after surgery and the VA increases gradually during this period. OCT characteristics before surgery and during follow-up where similar in all patients.

Conclusions:

in this study vitrectomy with PVD alone is effective in treating macular detachment due to optic pit. since macula reattachment occurs several months after surgery, gas injection, ILM peeling and laser photocoagulation don’t seem to play a role in retinal reattachment in this pathology
