To provide a normative database on retinal and choroidal thickness in three ethnic groups.

Age and gender matched individuals from three ethnic groups - Whites, Blacks and Asian Indians underwent Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (Spectralis HRA+OCT, Heidelberg engineering) scans of the macula. The mean retinal thickness values in the 9 subfields of the ETDRS grid and macular volume were recorded from the thickness map and compared between the ethnic groups. In addition, the choroidal thickness in the subfoveal, 2.5 mm nasal and temporal areas were also compared between the 3 ethnic groups.
The retinal thickness and macular volume was significantly lower in Black and Asian Indian eyes compared to White eyes. There was no significant difference between the Black and Asian Indians in the retinal thickness values. The choroid was found to be significantly thinner in Black eyes at all areas, compared to white eyes. The choroid was significantly thinner only in the central 1 mm area in Asian eyes compared to Whites. The choroidal thickness was comparable in the subfoveal and nasal areas in Blacks and Asians.
The differences in normative data of retinal and choroidal thickness in different ethnic groups should be taken into account when considering inclusion-exclusion criteria of retinal thickness in clinical trials.
