Ultrahigh speed 27G vitrectomy

Session Details

Session Title: Quick Fire Free Paper 3

Session Date/Time: Thursday 11/09/2014 | 14:30-16:00

Paper Time: 15:15

Venue: Boulevard D

First Author: : C.Claes BELGIUM

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present the properties and indications of ultrahigh speed and small 27 gauge(G) vitrectomy. New instrumentation brings new possibilities and demonstrates also limitations. the characteristics will be highlighted by videoclips.

Setting:

Theoretical principles will be illustrated by intra-operative situations from different vitreoretinal pathologies.

Methods:

The Alcon Constellation 27G system , that offers 7500 cuts per minute is used in different vitreoretinal pathologies.

Results:

The 27 G , 7500 cpm system is able to perform adequate core vitrectomy, vitreous base shaving, membranectomies and retinectomies in different vitreoretinal pathologies. Limitations of the system can be explained by the small port size and the increased flexibility of the shafts of the instruments .

Conclusions:

The smaller port size , increased cutting rate , altered flow rate and different flexibility of the 27G 7500 cpm opens a new horizon in vitreoretinal surgery techniques. Video images can highlight these new evolutions
