Abstract Details


To analyze the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) defect in the eyes with normal circumpapillary RNFL (cpRNFL) thickness by posterior pole asymmetry analysis (PPAA),Bruch membrane opening (BMO) and the outline of neural canal in enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT).


Prosepctive study in China.


84 eyes of 69 patients suspected as glaucoma were examined by EDI-OCT to obtain cpRNFL thickness, PPAA as well as central vertical sectional image of optic nerve head (ONH). Eight zones in PPAA were defined. Absolute black cells in PPAA were referred to the retinal thickness difference of more than 30 μm. The horizontal and minimal distances between the BMO and ONH surface (BMOH, BMOM), as well as between the termination of retinal pigment epithelium and ONH surface (RPEH, RPEM) were measured. In addition, the morphology of neural canal was evaluated.


216 black cells were counted. There was an obvious trend that the black cells in PPAA were more likely to concentrate on eyes with “U” shaped neural canal (p<0.0001). Moreover, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the ratio of RPEM and RPEH (0.771±0.08) was significantly larger than that of the ratio of BMOM and BMOH (0.719±0.009) for PPAA results. Only RPEM showed different significantly between the eyes with “U” shape and “W” shape neural canal (p=0.045<0.05).


This is the first report on the correlation of PPAA, ONH. We propose the lower the ratio of RPEM and RPEH, as well as the lower ratio of BMOM and BMOH, the thinner RPEM and the U shape neural canal as earlier indexes on RNFL defect.
