Abstract Details

Purpose:

A retrospective study to evaluate the efficacy of Silicone oil 5000, 2000 and 1000 Cs and to compare between their complications.

Setting:

A retrospective study to evaluate the efficacy of Silicone oil 5000, 2000 and 1000 Cs and to compare between their complications.

Methods:

20 eyes of 20 patients were injected with Silicone oil 5000 Cs during PPV, 20 eyes of 20 patients were injected with Silicone oil 1000 Cs during PPV and 20 eyes of 20 patients were injected with Silicone oil 2000 Cs during PPV. 23 G PPV and fluid/air exchange then air/silicone oil exchange had been undertaken for different retinal surgeries in 60 eyes of 60 patients. Follow up for 6 months.

Results:

Silicone oil 5000 Cs and 2000 Cs were emulsified in only one eye (5%), while emulsification happened in 3 eyes (15%) in Silicone 1000 Cs cases. Clinically significant cataract developed in 65% (9 from 14) of lenses that were clear at the time of surgery in cases with silicone 5000 Cs, 19% ( 3 from 16) in cases with Silicone 2000 Cs and in 20% (3 from 15) in cases with silicone 1000 Cs. Cases with pre-existing lens opacities progressed were developed in 83% (5 from 6) of cases with Silicone 5000 Cs, in 50%(2 from 4) in cases with Silicone 2000 Cs and in 40% (2 from 5) with 1000 Cs. Secondary glaucoma developed in 10 eyes 50% of cases with Silicone 5000 Cs, 6 eyes (30%) of cases with Silicone oil 2000 Cs and in 5 eyes (25%) of cases with Silicone 1000 Cs. Corneal decompensation occurred in only one eye (5%) of cases with Silicone 5000 Cs.

Conclusions:

After 6 months follow up, there was nearly no difference in the efficacy between Silicone 5000, 2000 and 1000 Cs. Incidence of cataract and secondary glaucoma was more in eyes with Silicone 5000 Cs than eyes with Silicone 2000 Cs and 1000 Cs. Corneal decompensation occurred in only one eye of cases with Silicone 5000 Cs.
