Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze choroidal maps (CMs) in patients with non-exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using swept source optical coherence tomography (Swept-OCT).

Setting:

Comparative observational study.

Methods:

CMs were obtained using Swept-OCT (Topcon Medical Systems, Oakland, NJ). A standardized imaging protocol was performed in all patients: Radial diameter 9.0 mm 16 overlap scans through the foveal center with automated ETDRS choroidal thickness map. Fundus autofluorescence (FAF) was obtained, exported and matched from Spectralis HRA+OCT (Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany) to Swept-OCT. Eyes were divided in Late non-exudative AMD/Geographic Atrophy (GA), Early AMD with medium and large drusen (Dr-AMD), Early AMD with Reticular Pseudodrusen (Pd-AMD), and without AMD (No-AMD) through FAF and OCT appearance. Eyes with GA were classified into 2 subgroups for each ETDRS sector: HypoFAF >50% of the sector (>50%) and <50% of the sector (<50%).

Results:

Overall CMs (mean) were 117 ± 12 µm for the GA group (18 eyes of 18 patients), 158 ± 20 µm for Dr-AMD (13 eyes of 13 patients), 124 ± 15 µm for Pd-AMD (18 eyes of 18 patients), and 192 ± 17 µm in No-AMD (11 eyes of 11 patients). CMs were significantly reduced via Student t test in GA group compared to Dr-AMD group (p<0,05) in 7/9 ETDRS sectors and to No-AMD group (p<0.05) in 9/9 ETDRS sectors. There was no significant difference in CMs between GA group and Pd-AMD group (p>0,05) in 9/9 ETDRS sectors. No statistical differences in CMs were found among ETDRS sectors with >50% and <50% atrophic (HypoFAF) or preserved retina (Hyper/IsoFAF) in GA group.

Conclusions:

CMs reveal a thinner choroid in eyes with GA and Pd-AMD compared with Dr-AMD and No-AMD. CM in the different ETDRS sectors is not associated with FAF features in eyes with GA.
