Abstract Details

Purpose:

LASIK using either a mechanical microkeratome or a femtosecond laser machine does not affect the retinal nerve fiber thickness.

Setting:

cairo University, Dar El Oyoun eye hospital, Cairo, Egypt

Methods:

Forty eyes of 20 patients were included i the study. 20 eyes underwent wavefront optimized LASIK using the Moria M2 microkeratome with a 90 microns disposable head and 20 eyes underwent wavefront optimized LASIK using the Alcon FS200 femtosecond laser machine . Measurement of the RNFL by RTvue Optovue OCT before the procedure then one month postoperatively. Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness changes were noted and analyzed fir both groups.

Results:

n the mechanical microkeratome group,The preoperative average RNFL thickness, inferior average, superior average, nasal average and temporal average were 94.6± 12.1 µm, 120.1 ± 11.2 µm, 122 ± 20.3 µm, 70.9 ± 10.7 µm, and 65.1 ± 13.4 µm respectively. The postoperative average RNFL thickness, inferior average, superior average, nasal average and temporal average were 95.1 ± 11.9 µm, 122.2 ± 11.4.6 µm, 120.7 ± 19.7 µm, 70.9 ± 12.2 µm, and 66.3.25 ± 13.5 µm respectively.No RNFL thickness parameter changed significantly after LASIK (P > 0.05).In the Femtosecond group, the preoperative preoperative values and the postoperative values were almost the same as the other group.

Conclusions:

LASIK using either a mechanical microkeratome or a femtosecond laser machine does not affect the retinal nerve fiber thickness.
