Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the results of intra-silicone oil injection of methotrexate at the end of vitrectomy for retinal detachment associated with advanced proliferative diabetic retinopathy

Setting:

Rassoul Akram Hospital, Iran University of Medical Sciences

Methods:

In this prospective comparative study, intra-silicone oil injection of methotrexate was performed at the end of vitrectomy for retinal detachment associated with advanced proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The rate of postoperative reproliferation associated with retinal detachment was compared with a similar group of patients but without methotrexate injection.

Results:

Forty eyes of forty patients (20 eyes in each group) were evaluated. Baseline characteristics were similar between the two groups. The rate of postoperative retinal detachment and the need for reoperation was similar between the two groups (P=0.3). Similarly, visual improvement was similar (P=0.4).

Conclusions:

Intra-silicone oil injection of methotrexate at the end of vitrectomy for retinal detachment associated with advanced proliferative diabetic retinopathy does not reduce the rate of postoperative reproliferation associated with retinal detachment.
