Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the anatomical and visual outcomes in using 2cc 100% Sulfur hexafluoride as tamponading agent for macular hole surgery.(MHS)

Setting:

This is a retrospective interventional case series done at a tertiary eye care centre in Southern India

Methods:

In this retrospective clinical study, 36 patients operated for MH from April 2011 to Aug 2012 with at least 3 postoperative visits were included. At the end of Vitrectomy , ILM peeling, Fluid air exchange , 2cc 100% SF6 was injected instead of non expanding gas. All patients were checked for IOP, gas fill, at 1ST post operative day. Post operative visual acuity gain and hole closure were checked at 2 week, 1, 3 month interval

Results:

34(94%) patients had 75% or more gas fill in 1st Post op day No patient had rise in IOP in the immediate or late post op period. 19 (52%)patient had residual gas bubble at the end of 2 week visit. 25 (69.4%)patients had increase in visual acuity (Snellen),most having a 3 line increase , 8(22.2%) had maintained their preoperative visual acuity. 31 (86.1%)patients had macular holes closed at the end of primary procedure , 100% had MH closed after 2nd surgery

Conclusions:

This technique of injecting 100% pure SF6(expanding gas) is a new, easier technique ,with safe and successful outcomes, and cost effective in comparison, to using non expanding gas for tamponade at the end of macular hole surgery.moreover no cumbersome calculations are involved while calculating the volume of gas
