Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the retinal Ganglion cells Complex (GCC) and the Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer (RNFL) thickness in different stages of DR, by SDOCT.

Setting:

A retinal neurodegenerative involvement has been highlighted in diabetes

Methods:

Five age-matched groups of patients (20 type I without DR,15 type II without DR,15 type II with non-proliferative DR, 10 type II with non-proliferative DR and macular edema (ME) , 9 type II with proliferative DR and ME) were compared. 30 healthy subjects were the control group.

Results:

Mean GCC thicknesses were respectively: 97.03±12.60µm, 94.97±8.09µm, 100.6±21.96µm, 147.7±29.48µm, 125.9±41.46µm. The two groups with ME demonstrated GCC thicker than the others (p<0.001). No significant differences between groups regarding RNFL (p=0.24) were found.

Conclusions:

DR macular edema is associated with a thickening of GCC. Moreover, such a modification does not involve RNFL.
