To find out the incidence of AMD in high altitude population and to find out the causative factors for any difference than from plain land population
Himalayan mountain region starting from 1000 meters to 4000 meters
1700 patients , 953 male and 747 female above the age of 70 years were examined in different eye camps in different altitude of Himalaya mountain. all study patients underwent full dilated indirect ophthalmoscopy by sngle observer and detailed fundus drawing was done and whether or not the patient is having AMD was noted. Due to such high altitude and difficult sometimes trekking route it was not possible to do any fundus photo.
102 patients were found to have AMD. 96 Dry type, 6 patients with Wet AMD. only 6% of the patients were found to have AMD.
AMD is definitely lower in high altitude. special food habit, environmental factors and possible role of UV radiation should be explored more in detail. this is perhaps the only ongoing study in this field of AMD in high altitude,
