Abstract Details

Purpose:

To demonstrate the utility of a simple lemon as a model eye to teach/learn steps in VR surgery using surgical 'wastes' such as nuclei removed during small incision cataract surgery(SICS) ,trypan blue stained anterior lens capsule used as internal limiting membrane(ILM) etc.

Setting:

Eye Hospital , wet lab training

Methods:

A small lemon with scooped out contents & covered on top with a +60D lens serves as a model eye within which phacofragmentation , floating up dropped nuclei , IOLs , ILM peel , buckle placement , bimanual VR surgery etc can be practised using novel materials & techniques.

Results:

Successful demonstration of simulated surgical techniques & hands on experience of steps of VR surgery can be achieved.

Conclusions:

A natural product such as a lemon & innovative recycling of surgical wastes as noted above is an excellent wet lab prelude for residents in training & the greenhorn VR surgeon.
