The evaluation of choroidal thickness using enhanced depth imaging-EDI, in patients with idiopathic epiretinal membrane in correlation with that of the fellow eyes.
University Eye Clinic of Ioannina
Thirty two patients with idiopathic epiretinal membrane from 57 to 85 years of age as well as 23 eyes as a control group from 37 to 80 years of age. The measurement of the thickness was taken at the fovea using EDI. A baseline measurement was taken followed by one after vitrectomy with peeling of the membrane and then at 3 and 6 months after surgery.
The subfoveal choroidal thickness in eyes with idiopathic epiretinal membrane ranged from 199 μm to 309 μm whereas in the patients’ fellow eyes it ranged from 248 μm to 336 μm. The comparison of the results among the three groups, as well as the comparison with the postoperative measurements are discussed.
It seems that the choroidal thickness in eyes with epiretinal membrane is thinner compared to that of the fellow eyes. Further changes that were observed after vitrectomy in patients undergoing membrane peeling seem to be transient as the thickness returns to that of baseline measurement 3 months after surgery.
