To evaluate results of epiretinal fibrosis surgical treatment.
The study was performed in S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution, Volgograd branch.
There were examined and surgically treated 76 patients (76 eyes) with epiretinal fibrosis. Patients’ mean age was 58 years. Patients were set into two groups. The first group of patients (46 eyes) had undergone a two-step surgical treatment consisting of a 27G three port vitrectomy with posterior hyaloid membrane removal, vitreal cavity tamponade with 1300 cSt silicone oil and subsequent 27G silicone oil removal 2-3 months after the first step. Patients of the second group had a single step surgery: a 27G three port vitrectomy with removal of posterior hyaloid membrane, epiretinal membrane with appurtenant structures of internal limiting membrane.
The initial BCVA averaged 0.3±0.02 (from 0.1 to 0.7). The postoperative BCVA equaled 0.6±0.012 (from 0.1 to 0.8). BCVA improvement in the first group was found in 43 eyes and its mean value was 0.58±0.015. In the second group amelioration of BCVA was observed in 28 cases and reached values of 0.63±0.019. Optical coherent tomography confirmed decrease in the height of retinal epithelium edema by 40 to 550 µM in 36 eyes of the first group (78.3%) and by 50 to 450 µM in 22 eyes of the second group (73%). Full regression of macular edema was achieved in 10 eyes of the first group (21.7%) and in 8 eyes of the second (26.6%) group. Tractional syndrome was eliminated in all the cases.
The above-mentioned approaches to surgical treatment of epiretinal fibrosis are of coequal efficiency and safety.
