Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate changes in the eye in patients after coronary artery bypass surgery with the use of food additives Pentaven.

Setting:

P.L. Shupik National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, SI “The Heart Institute by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine” Prof. Sergey Rykov, Prof. Borys Todurov, Prof. Oksana Petrenko, Lubov Denisiuk MD, Sviatoslav Suk MD, PhD, Venediktova Olga MD.

Methods:

Under the supervision of an ophthalmologist were 30 patients (60 eyes) - 22 men and 8 women. The average age of patients was 59 ± 1.4 years. Patients were performed heart surgery using artificial circulation. All patients were examined for surgical treatment in ophthalmology study, which included general ophthalmologic research methods and additional - the study of global sensitivity using computer perimetry, electrophysiological methods, optical coherence tomography. Contrast sensitivity were determined on the table Pelli Robson. By the beginning of the study and after one month, patients filled out a questionnaire, a questionnaire that assesses the quality of the distance and up close, read quality, the quality of colour and degree of visual fatigue at loads in points. Before discharge from hospital (7-8 days) and destination recommendations, patients were divided into two groups. In the first group - 13 patients discharged home with a list of cardiac and vascular products. In the second group - 17 patients - additional intended receiving food additive Pentaven 1 tablet in the morning for 1 month.

Results:

A statistically significant difference changes between the best corrected visual acuity in both groups were found, but the second group of patients the mean values of contrast sensitivity improved by 5 letters under the table Pelli Robson (p <0.05) compared with the data to initiation of therapy. In the first group, statistically significant changes in contrast sensitivity were found. According to the survey, patients subjectively second group more frequently (p <0.05) indicated a decrease in the visual fatigue loads. According to computer perimetry in 14 eyes (82%) of the main group registered increase sensitivity foveolar average of 6 dB (p <0.05), indicating improvement in the functional state of the central zone of the retina. Reported lowering the threshold electrical sensitivity of the retina and enhance critical fusion frequency flashing phosphene in 13 (76%) patients (p <0.05). The results improve the functional activity of the retina can probably be explained by the fact that under the influence Pentaven improves metabolism and microcirculation of the retina and activation of antioxidant processes in the retina.

Conclusions:

Nutritional supplement Pentaven positive effect on functional condition of the retina in patients with coronary artery disease after cardiac surgery using artificial circulation. The drug can be recommended as an important component of conservative therapy to improve and stabilize visual function of patients.
