The aim of this study was to evaluate our results of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with verteporfin (Visudyne) in patients with choroidal haemangioma.
The PDT is new option in treatment of symptomatic choroidal haemangioma.
The diagnosis was based on fluorescein and indocyanine angiography. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was examined on ETDRS optotype (Snellen decimal). We measured central retinal thickness (CRT) by optical coherence tomography (Cirrus, Zeiss). PDT was performed according standard protocol.
Our study group consists of 5 patients, 4 men and one woman. The average age was 45,2 ± 5,3 years. BCVA was 0,5 ± 0,1. In 4 patients the first manifestation of haemangioma was neuroretinal ablation, in one patient RPE detachement. Average CRT was 470 ± 154 µm. All haemangiomas were located along temporal arcade (four in upper arcade, one in lower arcade). In all patiets PDT with Visudyne were performed according standard protocol. The average spot size was 5982 ± 1616 µm. Average number of treatment was 1,2. One patient refused the next PDT. The average BCVA after treatment was 0,8 ± 0,3, the average CRT after treatment was 251 ± 60µm.
Based on our experience, the PDT is effective treatment of choroidal haemangiomas.
