Choroidal, retinal nerve fibre layer and macular thickness evaluation in patients undergoing hemodialysis and renal transplant recipients

To evaluate enhanced depth imaging (EDI) SD-OCT findings of patients with renal transplant and with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing haemodialysis (HD)

Right eyes of 16 renal transplant recipients, 14 ESRD patients undergoing HD and 15 control patients were included. Using SD-OCT, choroidal (CT), macular (CMT), RNFL thickness, macular volume (CMV) and retinal vessel diameters are measured.


The mean RNFL thickness was significantly lower in renal recipients and patients with ESRD (p=0.008). The CMV and CMT were found significantly higher in the control group (p=0.006; p=0.007 respectively). No significant difference was found in CT between the groups. The mean RNFL thickness and subfoveal CT were negatively correlated with duration of HD (r= - 0,463, p=0,034 and r= - 0,645, p=0,002 respectively).


Chronic renal failure and duration of HD affect RNFL, CT and CMT in patients with renal transplants and undergoing HD
