The use of lycopene-containing retinoprotector in the treatment of early stage of age-related macular degeneration

Purpose is to study the effect of lycopene-containing combined retinoprotector on clinical and metabolic parameters in patients with early stage of age-related macular degeneration

25 patients (47 eyes) with nonexceptive form of AMD aged from 50 to 84 were examined. Combined retinoprotector containing vitamin A (retinol palmitate) - 0.77 mg, lycopene - 5 mg, lutein - 4 mg, bilberry extract - 10 mg, was prescribed 1 capsule 1 time per day after meals for 1 month. The effectiveness of the treatment was assessed according to the data of an ophthalmological examination and the determination of malonic dialdehyde and antioxidant activity in blood serum and tear fluid.


On the background of treatment, visual acuity increased by 0.01-0.1 for 5 eyes (10.6%). 11 patients (36.7%) noted a decrease in visual fatigue during reading. There was weakened autofluorescence intensity in 20% of the examined patients. The level of malonic dialdehyde in the serum on the background of treatment tended to decrease, with a one-stage increase in antioxidant activity by 10-15%. In 16 patients (53.3%) the level of malonic dialdehyde decreased by 1.2-1.3 times compared with the initial data. In the tear fluid, the level of malonic dialdehyde decreased by 1.56 times, and the antioxidant activity increased by 1.4 times.


A decrease in the level of malonic dialdehyde, accompanied by an increase in the antioxidant activity in serum and tear fluid in patients with early AMD stage, confirms the antioxidant activity of the lycopene-containing combined retinoprotector used in the recommended doses.
