Purpose:
This study is intended to determine the correlation between choroidal thickness with retinopathy degree in type-2 diabetes mellitus patients.
Setting:
Hasanuddin University Teaching Hospital during June - September 2016
Methods:
This was a cross-sectional study which conducted in the Hasanuddin University Teaching Hospital during June - September 2016 with 60 eyes of 44 subjects who complied with the inclusion criteria. Degree of Diabetic retinopathy determined according to the International Classification of Diabetic Retinopathy using fundus photography and divided into No-Diabetic Retinopathy (NO-DR) 15 eyes (25%), Nonproliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (NPDR) 22 eyes (37%), and Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR) 23 (38%) eyes. Choroidal thickness measurement using Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) in the 9 areas based on the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) criteria.
Results:
The results obtained the mean thickness of the central choroid of NO-DR, NPDR, and PDR was 221 + 68 μm; 236 + 62.2 μm and 342 + 69.2 μm, respectively. Mean thickness of the central choroid was significantly higher in the PDR group compared to the No-DR and NPDR groups with p<0.001
Conclusions:
Choroidal thickness is significantly increased in accordance with the severity of diabetic retinopathy.
