The performance of a new developed rotation symmetrically refractive high add (+8D) multifocal IOL (MIOL) has not been been investigated in patients with maculopathy or myopia yet. We present here our first results with this lens (case series).

We analyzed 10 patients retrospectively: Myopic eyes with and without a maculopathy The following parameters were evaluated: Metamorphopsia, subjective refraction, visual acuity at different distances and patient satisfaction. Halo and glare was assessed with a computer based system. Additionally a patient questionnaire was evaluated.
The postoperative measurements of the visual acuity with the MIOL with higher near addition was on average 0.8 in myopic eyes and 0.5 with maculopathy. The defocus curve showed a binocular profile with a maximum at 0 D and 6 D. Halo and glare were either absent or described as undisturbing. The reading distance in 20 cm was well tolerated. Subjective reading speed was satisfying for all patients compared to the preoperative status.
Our analysis indicates, that implantation of MIOL with high add can be an option in myopic patients or patients with a maculopathy. The short reading distance was very well accepted by the patients. Furthermore, the implantation offers for the patient a magnifying effect for the future, when macula function drops.
