To compare the surgical outcomes after intra-scleral haptics fixation of an intraocular lens (IOL) with or without replacement for cases with an in-the-bag dislocation of the IOL.
This was a retrospective, non-randomized case series conducted at a single ophthalmological institution.
Cases with an in-the-bag dislocation of an IOL were treated by pars plana vitrectomy with intrascleral haptics fixation of the IOL. The same dislocated IOL was used in 6 eyes (Group A) and the IOL was replaced with another IOL in the other 9 eyes (Group B). The pre- and postoperative parameters analyzed included the visual acuity, refractive error, reduction of corneal endothelial cells density, and intraocular pressure.
There was no significant difference between the two groups in the postoperative visual acuity (P=0.388), refractive error (P=0.955), intraocular pressure (P=0.529), gap between targeted and postoperative refractive error (P=1.000), and endothelial cell density (P=0.940). A breakage or a titling of the IOL was observed in two eyes in Group A and required replacement.
The in-the-bag dislocated IOL can be used with the intra-scleral haptics fixation technique. However, a careful monitoring for postoperative complications should be performed.
