Vienna is situated in the North-East of Austria and lies on the
banks of the majestic Danube River. Surrounded by the natural
beauty of the Wachau region and the Vienna Woods and with
numerous parks and green expanses Vienna is an exceptionally
attractive city. It is by far the largest city in Austria and is its
cultural, economic and political capital.
For centuries, Vienna has been synonymous with music and was
home to Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Johann Strauss. This
outstanding musical heritage has been preserved right to the
present day. Up to 500 concerts per year attract music lovers from
all over the world. Music is also a vital part of the city's social life
and the Viennese regularly attend the Vienna State Opera “Staatsoper” and the “Volksoper”, the latter being devoted mainly
to light operas, popular operettas, musicals and dance events.
Many concert venues offer performances featuring popular
highlights of Viennese music, particularly the work of the most
famous composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Strauss.
Vienna is well known for a number of traditional foods such as
Wiener Schnitzel and their most famous chocolate cake with
apricot jam, Sacher Tort, from the Sacher Hotel.
