Abstract Details

To evaluate the acute effects of energy drink (ED) on subfoveal choroidal thickness (CT) using enhanced depth imaging spectral domain optical coherence tomography.

Gaziantep University, School of Medicine, Department of Ophthlamology, Gaziantep,Turkey

In this prospective study, 40 healthy subjects who received 250 ml ED and 40 healthy subjects who received same amount of spring water were enrolled. All participants underwent enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography scanning for subfoveal CT measurement at baseline, 5 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours and 6 hours after ED or spring water consumption. Optical coherence tomography scannings were performed by the same physician and all subfoveal CT measurements were taken manually by two independent masked physicians between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. All subfoveal CT measurements for both groups were statistically analyzed.

There was no significant difference in baseline and following time period subfoveal CT measurements between the groups (p > 0.05, for all). The difference in mean subfoveal CT among the following 7 measurement periods were not statistically significant in the study and control groups (p=0,417, p=0,856; respectively).

The ED didn’t change subfoveal choroidal thickness significantly in spite of the caffein content. This may be due to the interactions of caffein with other ingredients of the ED.
