Stickler syndrome is a hereditary disorder with high risk for retinal detachment which is often complex and challenging to manage. Our aim was to present the anatomical and visual outcomes of retinal detachment repair in childhood.

Retrospective analysis was performed with data of 13 children (10 boys and 3 girls) (mean age at first surgery: 14 years) with Stickler-syndrome undergoing retinal reattachment surgeries at the Semmelweis University, Dept. of Ophthalmology from February 2013 to August 2017.
Fourteen eyes of 13 children were operated. They underwent a mean of 1.86 surgical interventions (range: 1–5; SD: ±1.17) with a mean postoperative follow-up of 15.86 months (range: 2-45 months; SD: ±12.3). Total retinal reattachment was achieved in 69% of eyes. Scleral buckling was applied in 6 eyes and vitrectomy in 10 eyes (with silicone oil tamponade in 7 eyes). Mean preoperative visual acuity (VA) was 0.35 (0.005-1.0; SD: ±0.44), which improved to 0.45 (0.005-1.0; SD: ±0.4) at final follow-up.
Repair of retinal detachment in patients with Stickler syndrome often requires multiple surgeries, and visual outcomes are variable.
