New to EURETINA: EURETINA-Brief
Dr. Gearóid Tuohy

Dear EURETINA Members,

A very warm welcome to the second edition of EURETINA's web-based digital magazine, "EURETINA Brief"©.

EURETINA are delighted to continue our delivery of up to date summary articles on a range of topics of interest to retinal specialists across Europe. This resource is designed to accommodate the very busy schedules of all our members by providing them with a brief overview of some new developments in our field over the last month.

In this issue you will notice the incorporation of a feedback section where you can comment on any of the news items or articles under discussion. Previous articles and issues can be found in the archive section [link to Archive]

The current issue highlights a number of exciting developments in the field of research, including developments of therapeutic stem cell use and the discovery of a surprising new molecular player in CNV and AMD. Our clinical section features recent patient studies in the treatment of LCA and CRVO, while updates from the world of business and innovation identify a number of market and business developments currently attracting commercial interest and investment.

Finally, our feature bio-ophthalmology article this month reports on some fascinating research showing how Mother Nature adapts the use of DNA within the mammalian eye to radically improve nocturnal vision. The finding represents a timely new discovery in the year of Darwin's "150th" celebrations. The concept of adaptation was at the core of Charles Darwin's battle with his opponents over the evolution of the eye as an organ for vision. It is almost certain that this recent research on a most remarkable example of adaptation would delight one of the founding fathers of modern biology.

As always, increased interaction by you with the EURETINA web community serves to expand your professional network and keep you abreast of the latest initiatives in your field. Our hope is that such cross-fertilisation in an active web-based platform will lead to increased collaborative opportunities and ultimately to improved patient care. We look forward to hearing from you.
